Building Birling: Crafting Character with Baines Masonry

At Birling, we believe homes should be built on solid foundations—and that includes the parts you don’t always see, like the retaining walls that shape our streetscapes and gardens. That’s why we’ve partnered with Baines Masonry, a proudly Australian, family-owned company based just down the road in Appin, to deliver the retaining walls for Stage 1 and 2 of our community.
As Australia’s largest independent concrete block manufacturer, Baines blends old-fashioned integrity with modern innovation. Their business has spanned three generations, and today their commitment to sustainability, quality, and local sourcing makes them a perfect fit for Birling’s vision.
The team at Baines even developed a custom colour for our blocks—called “Birling”—designed to reflect the surrounding landscape with warmth and subtle texture. To achieve that, they blend sands from Penrose and Newcastle, ensuring consistency and tonal richness in every batch.
Recently, members of the Cameron Brae team took a behind-the-scenes tour of the Appin plant to see firsthand how these blocks come to life—from recycled aggregates and fly ash (a repurposed coal by-product), to solar-powered mixers and recycled water systems. Every element is part of a cleaner, smarter manufacturing process that aligns with our sustainability values.
The visit left an impression on Birling Sales Consultant, Dianne.
“I’ve worked in property for years,” she said, “but seeing what goes into making these blocks—how precise, sustainable and considered the whole process is—it really changed how I think about them.”
She laughed, recalling her time in the control room: “I was in awe, trying not to touch anything! It honestly felt like a NASA mission. The team at Baines are absolute pros.”
Dianne says the experience has given her a fresh perspective she’s looking forward to sharing. “I haven’t had the chance to explain all this to my buyers just yet—but now I can really show them that their retaining walls aren’t just practical. They’re part of something thoughtfully made, proudly local, and built to last.”
